I have a computer with an Intel Celeron 500mhz and with 12.6 gigs of hard disk with Windows 98 on it. I would like to wipe out all the memory to the computer and switch to Windows 2000. The installation goes fine. But after the boot, it goes to Windows 98 crap. Please help me. Tell me how to wipe the memory without physical actions like hitting it with a hammer.

I did a clean install without the re-formatting because I forgot how to re-format. And I also tried to upgrade, Both which made it re-boot back into Windows 98.

Soap ! What do you mean when you say wiping out all memory? My guess is you mean wiping out all of the data on your hard drive, repartition and reformat your hard drive, and install Windows 2000 as the only operating system on your computer?
Recommended is that each operating system should have their own partition or drive. I do not think there would be any success in trying to install two different operating systems on the same partition or drive. When plunging into NT world, the NTFS formatting is recommended unless there is a need of a dual boot system in which the non-NT operating system has a need to gain access to files that are inside the partition that NT operating system resides. Windows NT 4.0 utilization requires that the boot partition ( drive C) to be FAT16. In a hard drive, the first partition or partitions is/are faster than the rest: that is C drive is faster than D drive, and D drive is faster than E drive (this assuming with ONE physical hard drive). With the nowadays AMD XP 1600+ processor and better, Windows 98 maybe seem to be obsolete unless for some occasions of backward compatibility of applications that are designed for Windows 98 and that Windows 98 still supports for wider game and multimedia application utilizations. You can repartition your hard drive to be one large 12.6 GB partition and format it as NTFS and install Windows 2000 one it. But then you will not be able to install any other operating system on it except this Windows 2000. My only 15 GB hard drive has all four operating systems on it: Windows 98, Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000 Professional, and Windows 2000 server, and a free space of 6.4 GB in one large partition for mpeg 2 and mpeg 4.

Cleo....no its the full version....
Happy user....yes i mean that I want to clean the hard drive and basically start-over. But I would like to know how, because it seems that this WIndows 98 is really stubborn and won't go away.

Soap,
Go into the PC the BIOS and set the startup sequence to boot to CD Rom drive, then start the install from the W2K CD. After a short time during the install, you will be given the option to format the disk, just follow the prompts, partition, format and install clean version of W2K. No more 98!Cleo

Soap, you did not read what I wrote above about when you are going into the NT world. Again, here it is: It is recommended that the partition that Windows 2000 or Windows NT 4.0 resides be formated as NFTS unless there is a need of a dual boot system of Win98-Windows NT or Windows 2000 in which the non-windows NT operating system, in this case Windows 98, has a need to gain access to this partition (resided by Windows NT 4.0 or Windows 2000). Once you choose this partition to be NTFS, then how could it still be in Windows 98 loading mode? Unless you format your hard drive like I did to my hard drive, which is C-drive to be FAT 16 and many other partitions for other operating systems each with its own file system !
About how to install Windows 2000, there are three main options: install from a bootable CD-ROM of Windows 2000, install from the Windows 2000 boot floppy disks; install from hard drive (after you copy the setup files from the Windows 2000 CD-ROM disk onto your hard drive; or install over a network. Since this option is not available to you in DOS mode, that is the reason I said three options above. Try one or the other; I have never seen any Windows installation failure by using all of these options. I mean initial failure during this installation process. Of course there are many Windows installation failures, but these are cases with definite and clear problems, not just some Windows 98 stubbornness.

Unless you do not know anything about how to install this Windows 2000, and that you have never tried it before, then post here with this clear intention of specific questions. Specific questions deserves specific and helpful answers. Vaguely asking makes answering a of-choice task.

MAKE the FOUR 2000 install disks and ALWAYS use them do dont try installing directly from the cd disk unless you like trouble ! using the floppys will work every time !
(the makdisk/boot dir is on your cd)Xargon

thats a load of.. "£$% too.
just put it all as ntfs.

ntfs is the best operating system for win 2k, as its a 32 bit system, this means that it will work with almost all modern applications, and games. windows 98 is a 32 bit system, and so cant read ntfs!!! it wont work!
and happy....why have them oper systems installed??? there really is no point! win 95 bag of &^&* and win 98 replaced it. win nt has been replaced with 2k, which is stable, and fast. win xp too buggy at the mo.i have win 2k, and i find its the best one.
select bios to boot cd as first device, then just stick the disk in, and hope for the best! if it don't work, then just restart and try again. i only had problems installin win xp, but got passed them by restartin and startin from scratch!
