I am attempting to install W2K on this generic model. All goes well until the install reaches the W2K splash screen and then the progress bar stops half way thru. Same thing for safe mode. I have used two different HDD, CPU, memory and video card. Always the same result. Thos O.S. won't load on this machine. Any suggestions? Thanx.

Sorry Mavis - this machine is generic - not a Dell. How does the IDE controller affect this problem?

Win2000 is fussy about hardware drivers. If a driver is not included and you didn't supply it at the start up (F6) you can get failures.
Also, Win2000 prior to SP3 does NOT support 48 bit LBA. If the hard drive is SATA you need to configure it as an IDE or supply SATA controller drivers at the beginning of the installation (F6).

... just going by your spec's
Manufacturer/Model: Dell / Dimension 2350
... some people tend to post "their pc" spec's rather than the spec's of the pc "with" the problem!
... its not always clear.... maybe I need spec's ... lol

Mavis - As I was composing my original post I tried to change the manu/model window from Dell 2350 to Generic but the window kept defaulting to a lot of irrelevant stuff so I just left it. That's why my text referred to a "generic model". Sorry for the confusion.
OtheHill - no, it is not SATA. This should have been a routine install but as I say, the install begins with NTFS formatting of the HDD, then loads all the W2K files, but when the splash screen appears, the progress bar gets only half way and it freezes. Very weird. My last shot is to use a different motherboard. Will keep you posted. Thanx to you both for your help.

As I said above, Win2000 is fussy about drivers. If it can't find a suitable driver it may just fail.
Try providing the motherboard chip set drivers on a floppy disk by using F6 when prompted.

This is interesting. I tried loading Windows ME and when it got to the part about inputting user info, it froze. I will try the chipset update, but if that doesn't work it's sayanara mobo.

Does the mb have an onboard nic? If its an add in card pull it. 2k is really fussy about nics.
