I’ve following config.:

Notebook Toshiba Portege 7200
OS: W NT 5.0.2195 Serv. Pack 1 , Windows 2000 Professional
BIOS : Portege 7220cteV1.70

On Partition C: is W2k Prof. Installed, Part. D: is for data.

I’ve connected a Maxtor 4 Ro80J0 USB Device with 80 GB via USB 2.0, with 4 partition a` 20 GB.
With the explorer or diskmanager i can see the additional logical partition’s (E,F,G,H)

Then i tried to install an add. OS: - Windows 2K Advanced Server - on the external 80 GB HDD.

My actions:

- I started the install.-CD, copied the install-files on my pc (unfortunately the files were copied into c:/winnt, althougt i changed the destination for the install-folder to E:Winnt, to create a new directory! - – and then the PC was rebooting. The reboot was started from the install-CD – after the normal screen‘s, according the license, etc, i got the screen with the detected partitions, where i can install the new w2k-Version.
Unfortunately, i only had partition c: and d: for choice, but not the partitions on the external HDD.
- The driver for the external USB – HDD, i‘d already installed in my w2k prof. system

My questions:
- who has experience in this area?
- Who can give me a guideline ?
- Is it possiple to install W2K advanced server on external USB HDD’s, isn’t it?

Thank you very much for your prompt help

Hans

The problem is, you need to be able to access the HDD (hard drive) in order to bootup. If you can figure a way to load the USB drivers and the USB external HDD drivers before the operating system then you can do it. If you can't, you'll have to forget it I'm afraid.
