Hi,
When I was updating my second video card's drivers, this problem appeared:
If I upgrade the drivers by pressing right button >>> install on .INF file, it installs something and tells me "Installation Failed" and asks me to reboot. When I reboot and go to the device manager, my video card shows an error and is disabled.
If I upgrade the drivers from windows device manager, I get "File not found" error at the end of installation. The result is the same after reboot.
I'm using Win2k Server, and this error has nothing to do with the drivers I was installing because I used them without any problems before. I also uninstalled the previous drivers before upgrading.
Does anyone know why this happens? Is there a solution for this problem without reinstalling Windows?
Computer:
Intel Celeron 433Mz
ATI Traveller 8 MB - VIDEO CARD with no 3D support
Dimond Monster 3D II - 3D video card addon (secondary video card) connected through PCI port, Voodoo2 compatible.
128 MB + 32 MB RAM
40 GB Western Digital HDDP.S. The problem is not in the drivers (I used FastVoodoo2 v3.0) because I used these drivers before with no problems. I think that the installation process damaged one of Windows components, but I have no idea which one.
I have removed everything about my DM3DII/Voodoo2 video addon from windows registry, uninstalled all of the drivers, removed all of the devices (Voodoo2 multimedia device + 3 nonPnP devices). I'm a newbie to the computers, but I have no idea why these errors appear and why the drivers don't get installed.
I've looked at some log files, heres what setupapi.log says about the whole installation:--------START--------

during the installation process, setup replaced the file "riched20.dll" with its own version. This is the only file that is still left intact. I have a copy of the previous version, but does it affect this problem in any way?

I have removed everything about my DM3DII/Voodoo2 video addon from windows registry
- I think that's the trouble - you've deleted a standard windows entry that just happens to refer to your GFX card. I suggest you do a repair/install to replace any missing files and/or reg entries.

I don't think thats the problem because the error appeared before I started tweaking with the registry.
Anyway... If I do "scanreg /fix", will it restore the missing keys?
And if I do windows repair, will that affect my currently installed programs?

:( can't even use scanreg, it seems microsoft didn't include it in win2k package.
It was a nice tool in 98...
I was thinking installing Win98 SE on drive E, it will be only for gaming and I'm wondering if it will create a lot of problems between win98 and win2k (replacing each-other's libraries, etc.)
btw... I really don't understand why "Installation Failed" appears. Even Voodoo2Uninstaller.inf doesn't work, it does some stuff and then says an error at the end.

I suggest you get Filemon to monitor the install. It'll produce a lot of output, but you'll only be interested in the point where the "file missing" message appears.

I ran the program and tried to install the drivers. The program helped, I filtered out all mmc.exe calls (win installer) and found lots of errors, some of them about files that I don't think I ever had.
Well... here are the errors only (each repeats several times at different instances during the installation)

I'm going to try to figure this stuff out, but I don't think I can correct all of those errors (I don't have file called voodoo2.pnf anywhere)

There's a lot to digest there - many of the "file not found" is just part of the search process BEFORE the files are copied. voodoo2.pnf is just the compiled voodoo2.inf, which won't exist yet. Can't see anything obvoius let. Will let you know if I do.
