Subject: INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE |
Comment: i'm running win2k on a pII 350 mhz hewlett pavilion. I recently installed a cd-writer and am ethernet card. It worked fine and was rebooted many times. Then, quite suprisingly, halfway thru the splash screen it gave me an INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE error (blue screen). I think it's hardware because the hard drive makes a clicking noise :( but it could be the floppy drive that's making the noise, I can't tell exactly. Help me, please!

Reply: (edit)It sounds like you know what you have to do!! Remove everything from the unit that is not needed to operate. Start the unit with only the bare essentials. Then add each item one at a time until you find the bad item. If the unit will not boot with only a video card, hard drive, and 1 stick of ram, then it may be the hard drive. Replace it.

Reply: (edit)Either that, or connect a different floppy to the machine. If it doesn't make that noise then it's not the floppy, and I'd bet my money it's your hard drive. Also, try booting with a Win98 boot disk and seeing if FDISK can see the hard drive. And make sure all the cables are connected (which they probably are). If you heard a kerrChunk-click, then I think your hard drive is toast....

Reply: (edit)If you could ever boot again... To copy the valuable data to an other partition, you can use the recovery console. If it was not installed, then you can still access it through the setup cd, starting a repair. I also had this type of error last week, after 3 days I gave up and reinstalled the whole system. I just tired to install IE6, and when it rebooted, blue death.

Reply: (edit)I have a ProStar laptop running Win2k. It worked just fine for half a year after installation. Yesterday it suddenly got frozen when I was reading a text file (!) in Notepad and I had to reboot it using the power button. After that all I get is INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE at startup. I used the recovery console but couldn't fix the problem. So I installed another copy of Win2k and was able to read my old data but after rebooting a few times it doesn't let me log on saying it can't find the domain (!???). I'm suspecting it's a boot virus. Any ideas of what can be done? Thanks!
