Greetings Dude !
I`ve been trying to install Win200 Pro on my hard-disk but I keep getting a Stop Error (InAccessible_Boot_Device) framed in a blue screen !
I have 2 ten Gb partitions and currently I`m can access my harddisk via Win ME without any problems.
Specs are :- Maxtor 20Gb , AMD Athlon 1 Ghz, 128 SDRam.
Please help mates !

I`ve also scanned my system both for viruses as well as bad sectors. Luckily, nothing was destroyed.
Please help !

W2K doesn't like partitions prepared/formatted for it via ME...
They have to prepared using '98 or the W2K set-up routine itself.
http://www.windows2000faq.com/Articles/Index.cfm?ArticleID=20188
from John Savill's FAQs at:
http://www.windows200faq.com - installations section deals with it briefly.
Another resource that may shed lite for you - scroll down somewhat...
http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/techinfo/reskit/samplechapters/fnhd/fnhd_exe_woti.asp
HDD controller/HDD/Drivers/BIOS etc all may an effect here for W2K problems.
Run the chkupgrd.exe util to verify your system 'is' W2K compliant? It's supposedly on the CD; is also available at:
http://www.seminar.compu-shack.com/mowww/download_main.html
scroll dwon to the M$ section.

I dissagree with the last post. Windows 2k can't setup a FAT32 partition larger then 30 gigs but can use one if it's already created.
Microsoft itself recomends using Partition Magic or another OS that can support over 30 gigs to set up the partiton.
Are you trying to Dual boot with ME or upgrade it to Win 2k?

The size of the hard drive in the original post is 20 gig and set with two 10 gig partitions. The questions concerning W2K limits of 30 gig partitions is a moot point.
I see no bad advice given in ???'s response, nor do I see anything to really disagree with.
If Harphajan is trying to set up a dual boot configuration or is attempting an upgrade from ME that would be nice to know.
You could make up the 4 install boot floppies and try using them for the installation. You can make these floppies by running "makeboot.exe" from the Bootdisk directory on the W2K CD. Once they are made boot your PC to the first floppy disk created and follow the prompts.

The point I was trying to make was not about partition size but the fact that Win2k has no problems installing to a drive that was partitioned by another OS. Even Microsoft agree's with this method.
I never said it was bad advice, I just said I didn't agree with it.

But since we are speaking of moot points, you advice about how to boot with the disks or CD is moot since he already tried to install the OS. You get this message because of incompatability of the chipset. it has nothing to do with booting from the 4 floppies or the CD.

I agree with what you say about my post. It is moot. Didn't mean to offend you, my apologies if I did. Also my apologies to Harphajan, I didn't read your post at all correctly.
The article listed by ??? located at:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/techinfo/reskit/samplechapters/fnhd/fnhd_exe_woti.asp
should be helpful. That article points to, amoung other things, the machine BIOS needing to be updated and incompatible IDE controller drivers.
Also, make sure any Bios virus protection is disabled when performing the W2K install. And, if you might have your PC connected to a serial controlled UPS device, make sure it is disconnected during the install.
It is also possible for bad ram or an incompatible hardware device to cause this error.

Fellow mates !
Problem :
a) I would like to install Windows 2000 Pro in one of the 2 10Gb partitions I have . I`m not Dual-Booting nor I have any other OS installed prior to this other then my current Win ME.
b) I encountered a STOP ERROR 0x0000007b at the beginning of installation
c) When I run the Win2000 cd , to check for compatibility via thier 'check upgrade tool` I receive the following error message :
-The option to upgrade will not be available at this time because Setup was unable to load the file
C;\WINDOWS\UpgDlls\w95upg.dll\WIN9XUPG\W95UPG.DLL
d) From the nature of my problem I suspected my hard-disk might be incompatible .Hence, I check for HCL at
-http://windows.microsoft.com/windows2000/reskit/webresources.-
e) My Hard Disk was not listed there :-
Hard Drive Specs :- Maxtor Diamond Max VL 40 3204H2
20.4 Gb
f) I checked for latest driver on Maxtor.com for Win 2K, but there are NONE !
g) My system is Virus - Free and doesn`t have any Hard Disk errors
AMD Athlon 1 Ghz 128 Ram
h) I`ve also disable the virus checking from BIOS.Please help !

Hi Harphajan,
The hard drive you have is listed as being W2K compatible...it is on the HCL.
Have you checked your mother board manufaturer's site for an updated BIOS?
You should do this and if there is an updated version available, I would try flashing the BIOS. Please read and follow their instructions for flashing the BIOS very carefully.

Harphajan,
It does seem like there can be a problem in some cases trying to install W2K over an ME installation or even with a drive that was formatted with an ME disk. This problem doesn't always arise, but it does suggest a possible cause of your problem.
From what I've read it looks like the only way to verify if this is the problem is to reformat the drive prior to attempting the install. This would mean, however, that you'd lose your present ME installation. Though, it might be possible to re-format your second partition (using a Win98 startup disk or other third party utility) and install W2K to that partition. I think it's a long shot but you could try it. This would result in a dual boot configuration.
If you can afford to whip out your present ME install and re-format the disk (again making sure to use a Win98 startup disk or other third party utility) it would be another road to try.

This is actually a new message-
Was running W2K fine on an 700Mhz Athlon with an ABIT KA7.
Switched to a brand new motherboard ASUS A7A266 with DDR ram, and new processor. It also has the ATA100 for the HDD's on board.
Boots to a point, and then gives the message in question.
Should I look for updates on windows? or BIOS updates. It seems silly that I woud need a BIOS update since the thing is brand new...
-Tahnks Todd.

I have an ASUS A7A266 mb as well, using a Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 45 hd. Everything was working fine until I downloaded udmaupdt.exe from Maxtor's site. This is a utility that let's you set the UDMA level of the drive. Now I cannot get W2K to work, unless I replace the UDMA cable with a standard 40 conductor IDE cable. I've seen many suggestions that state that SP2 for W2K will resolve the issue, but it does not. Right now I'm in the process of trying the IDE driver, which can be found at http://www.ali.com.tw The chipset on the board is the ALI NorthBridge 1535D+, which fortunately has drivers available on the site. Basically, when setting up W2K, there is a point just before the error occurs that you can press F6 to substitute the hd drivers. I'm going to try this, good luck everyone.

Hi!
I read all the comments on this problem. Here is my solution, plus I am doing it as I type this:
1. Place the CD in your CD Writer (if you don't have it, place in your CD Rom).
2. Copy the files from your CD to a folder in WinMe (which you created before as a spare).
3. In the new folder of WinMe, double click the setup file.
4. Follow the instructions in the process. My computer is now at the stage of installing devices. Now it is asking me for my reginal settings.
I have 2 hard drives on my ccomputer, 20GB and a 10GB, plus I partitioned the 20GB.
Try this and let me know how you make out.

TJ,
The following link may provide you with some answers with enabling UDMA in Win2K. I believe you will be required to enable UDMA before you can use an 80-pin cable.http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;Q247951
Hope it helps.

I also had this problem with my Maxtor drive.
You should check, if there is some kind of a cylinder limitation jumper at the back of the drive. Mine was set incorrectly. You should put it in the none limitation position.
Then it also worked as an ATA-100 drive on my Promise Controller (PDC20265).
My board: Gigabyte GA-7ZXR first edition (the controller is onboard)
my harddisk: Maxtor 3073H4 (30 MB)
