Subject: INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE in W2k Pro.... |
Comment: Okay, here's the deal. Yesterday, I had a 2gb partition for w2k pro and a 3gb for w2k server. W2k pro got so filled up (it had like 10 mb free) that i decided to delete the w2k server partition (since i dont really use it for anything) and add that free space to the w2k pro partition (using Partition Magic 7). After doing that, everything seemed fine, w2k pro ran fine. Today I started up w2k pro only to see a BSOD w/ INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE I've tried running chkdsk /f on it, and repairing the partition from the w2k setup. No luck. Anyone got any suggestions as to what to do next(besides totally re-installing w2k pro)?

Reply: (edit)Was your server installed first or was your workstation? basically, did you delete the OS Loader,, Boot.ini, and other needed files when you deleted the Server partition? Have you booted with a Win9x disk, run FDISK and checked to make sure the correct partition is Active?

Reply: (edit)Server was installed after Pro. Here's my OS specs: I had a quadriple-boot (in order of installation): 1) Win98 (on my master physical drive) 2) W2k Pro on a partition on my slave 3) W2k Server on another partition 4) and XP pro on another partition on the slave. The W98 partition is set active, always has been. I've not messed w/ it. Neither did i delete or mess w/ the OS loader. I simply erased the partition that server was on.

Reply: (edit)If you have an ERD diskette, start reinstalling your pro version when it comes to choose between installing and repairing choose repair using your diskette.

Reply: (edit)I took a HD out of one machine, formatted and installed Win2K Pro on it in another machine and put it back in the first machine. Now it won't boot in the first machine. I keep getting the inaccessible_boot_device error. However, when I hook the same HD to any other machine, it boots up fine. Could there be a memory or system board issue with the machine that won't boot? If so, how can I tell. Thanks - JW

Reply: (edit)re Vasya's first message... I've just done something very similar, i.e Used Partition Magic to add the remaining free space on my 30Gb hard drive to an empty partition (preparing for installation of WinXP) now I can go into Win98, but Win2K Pro is giving me the "Inaccessible_boot_device" Stop error. However, first thing this morning it worked fine? Vasya, did you get any further with your problem? regards, Ian

Reply: (edit)I am having somewhat same problem in the sense I also get the INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE message whenever I shutdown my W2K Pro. Here is something intresting ; when I switch off the computer (either by selecting the shutdown option) or (after I get the INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE message) it will not boot up properly instead it keeps on giving me this error. But when I get the INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE error and if I press the RESET switch instead of shutting down the power I can boot up fine!!!!!! Can't figure out what is happening. Any help would be wellcome. Kardar
