Hi!

I’m having serious problems with my PC. Just recently I’ve been faced with the blue screen of death. I’m done everything I could possible think of to restore the PC, but nothing has worked.

I’ve searched the internet for possible solutions but none of the posted solutions worked for me. In most cases they require you to load windows (which I can’t) and then provide a step by step solution. I can’t seem to get anything except the blue screen. In the CMOS Setup Utility, I switched the first boot device to the CD-Rom, but for some strange reason it doesn’t read the CD.

I’ve created system disks (4) from the actual Windows 2000 CD. Using the system disks, I tried to get the PC to load windows or at least get to me the C:, but that didn’t seem to work either. After I started the computer with the system disk inserted, I got a new error message Disk I/O Error.

By a long shoot I’m not an expert when it comes to troubleshooting computers. At this point I don’t know what else to do. Can you suggest a few ideas?

What does blue screen say?

It sounds like your hard drive may be dying. Go to the drive manufacturer's website and download diagnostic utility (they've nearly all got one and it creates a bootable floppy) - then run it to check out your drive.

(note - if your drive manufacturer doesn't have a utility, get drive fitness from hitachi site - that works for most types of drive).

Kim,

When you say 'same troubles', do you mean just the blue screen - or the rest of it too?

If your HD is ok, then probably corrupt system file or driver - some more info would help.

PS. A repair reinstall often sorts this problem - http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;292175&Product=win2000

we get blue screen and it won't let us access the cpu at all. It will not load windows or settings or anything.

The message says "INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE"

First try booting into recovery console and running:-

chkdsk /p
then
fixboot

If no good, try the repair reinstall feature I linked above (if it will let you)

Recovery console:-
