Hi All,

I use OutLook Express available with IE6 on Windows 98.

Recently i copied the outlook mail folder containing the inbox.dbx,
outbox.dbx and other mail box files (complete) directory. Usually i
use this method to copy mail boxes to other PC running on Windows 98.

Recently i installed Windows 2000 and tryed to put the mail box files
in the mail box directory of outlook express. It failed, it may be
bacause i tryed the mail box files of oe6 (win98) to oe5 (default one
available) of win 2k. I have installed IE6 and OE6 from microsoft web
site. Still the same problem.

Please help,

Regards,

Yujin Boby

Try http://chattanooga.net/~scochran/oe5faq.htm

I used this program about a year ago to solve a simular issue. Can't remember exactly how it works, but I managed to read my .dbx files.

Now I use http://www.genie-soft.com/default.html

Great for backing-up OE files

Hi,

Thanks Gaudi for the help.

The Program available at the above url is for OE5. My out look data files are in OE6 format. I tryed it copying to OE5 of Win 98 and OE6 of Win 2k, both same result. Can't display the message.

I recently added Win 2K to a machine running Win 98 with IE6 and OE6. Win 98 is my C: and Win 2K is my F: (only one hdd in machine). C: is FAT32 and F: is NTFS. I changed the default location of my message store in OE5 (Win 2K) to use the same message store location as OE6 uses in Win 98. I immediately had access to my old e-mail storage folders and e-mail from OE5 in 2K. Also I can download mail from either OE and it all goes to the same place. Works great.

In your Win 2K iteration of OE (doesn't matter if it's ver 5 or 6) do this:
Tools menu -> Options -> Maintenance tab -> Store Folder... button -> Change button -> browse for old message store folder, highlight it and click OK. At this point OE should display a message saying that there appears to be a message store at that location and asking if you want to use that message store. Read this carefully. If you give the wrong answer OE will delete the old message store and put your new, empty message store where the old one was. OK your way out.

If you only have Win 2K on your machine now, try creating a folder directly off the root drive (usually C:). Set up this empty folder as your mail store (by above method). Put your old mail folder on your root drive. Import your old mail into your new mail folder. It's important to create your new mail folder off the root drive and not under a user profile. I'm not sure about Win 2K, but if you try to change the message store in Win XP to a newly created folder under a user profile, OE will refuse to load. No error messages, just no OE. You have to delete the newly created mail folder to get OE back.

Hi,

Thanks for the really informative suggestion.

I have installed windows 98 again and download IE6 to get my mails in OE6 format. After doing this i just uninstalled IE6. Now i am using the IE5 shipped with Win 98.

Will shortly try a dual boot (win 98 & 2k)
