Hi

Everytime I click on Shut down, the following message comes up. "end progrogram, iexplorer.exe" and the message at the bottom says "program not responding" and I have to click the "end now" button.

Is it a virus or worm or a windows error.

Many thanks

Yaseen

Why don't you try scan your computer with an antivirus and verify there are no viruses in your computer. If yo don't have an anitvirus (an you should) go to http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ where you can do a virus scan for free. If you don't find any viruses, re-install Internet Explorer. Go to http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/default.asp to download IE 6.

This is all I can think of doing before taking more extreme measures.

That isn't a virus causing that. I'm not sure why it happens, but I think that happens when you either have multiple windows open and close some that don't completely close, even though the window does, or it is a pop-up that never made it to your screen, for whatever reason, and the iexplorer was preparing to open the window to show the pop-up but stopped before it got to the opening part and that iexplorer.exe file just didn't close. You can check under Processes in your Task Manager to see if there are more iexplorer.exe files than there are windows open to the internet. This happens to me a lot. With me my computer is kind of slow sometimes and is part of the reason, but that doesn't mean that there is something wrong in your computer. You can run scans anyways if you're not sure and just to be safe.

This is a malicious virus. I just found out it on our servers. I disable a couple of them, especially our DNS server. Unfortunately, Norton Antivirus doesn't detect it. You have to do what Smith says, delete it from:

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\iexplorer.exe

You also have to go to the registry and delete the entry under:

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\sysconfig = %SYSTEM%\iexplorer.exe
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServices\sysconfig = %SYSTEM%\iexplorer.exe

If you need more info, check this out:
