Comment:

I installed Internet Explorer 6 (over 5.5 SP2) and each time I re-booted I got an error message saying Webscanx.exe has caused and error and I noticed my McAfee Virus Scanner had disabled most of my scans (eg System Scan, Download Scan and Internet Scan).

I uninstalled IE6 and reinstalled IE6 twice but still had the same problem. I have reverted back to IE5.5 SP2 and the problem has gone away.

OK, so I can use IE5.5, but does anyone know if this is an incompatability between IE6 & McAfee Virus Scan or can it be resolved by some tweaking etc?

I'm running W2K SP-2.

I had the same problem with my VirusScan 4.5 with SP1. I called McAfee and was told IE 6.0 is not yet supported by their software and they don't expect that it will be until Dec or ever Jan. VirusScan v4.5.1 (their latest) does not offically support IE 6.0 either, but it does seem to be working fine with IE 6.0 for me and is a free download if you have a valid grant number.

The latest VirusScan works fine with IE6, so update and upgrade your VirusScan and that error message should go away....

I had that problem too, but I remove internet scanning and everything is fine.

IE6 and Internet scanning dont work.

My virus scan version is V4.5.0.

Another problem, have u notice when u install the mcafee virus scan, when u right click on IE webpage, there is a delay before the menu pop's up? I unistall the virus scan and the delay is gone. Wierd.

Yep. I get the same error in the webscanX executable upon start-up. I guess I should revert back to IE 5.5, or disable the download/internet scan configuration, unless someone could let me know if a newer version of McAfee supports IE 6 internet scan.
McAfee Virusscan version - 5.21.1000.1
Virus Def's - 4.0.4139
Scan Engine - 4.1.40
Glad I'm not the only one with the problem...

Hi Navy I have the same problems as you do (on windows XP) - and that just exactly one day after Mc Affee for the first time saved me (and my win98 machine) from getting a trojan prog from a website!
The most anoying thing is the delay during the right-clicks on webpages. You saved me alot of time by pointing that out!

Not installing Internetscan of course makes the WebScanX error disappear, but usually I just run the internet scan and disable the system scan, what makes far more sense to me.

Searching for solutions...
McAffee v4.5.0.534, engine 4.1.40.

On the WindowsXP Update Site I found a "Compatibility Update" Wich lists various McAffee VirusScan products. After having installed the updated I now get a warning prior to installing VirusScan4.5 but all the problems (delay on rightklick in iexplorer and crashes of VC) remain the same after installation. So I guess that I'll get myself McAffee VirusScan 6 wich was just released...

I am running IE6 with McAfee VirusScan V5.21.1000 and Scan Engine 4.1.60 and Virus definition 4.0.4186.

I am getting the same program error message regarding WebScanX.exe.

After reading all the above, I am still unsure which version you recommend upgrading to to solve my problem.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Rick

Hi, I have some PC´s with W2K Professional and Mcafee 451 SP1. I can not access to Internet Explorer. Appears a error msg about wbhook32.dll. If I disable Mcafee (no unistall, only disable) it works OK. I installed IE 5.5 SP2 and works until reboot the PC. The same happens if I delete de cookies but I could not solve the real problem. Do you have the answer?????? Thanks in advanced.

This wbhook32.dll problem occurs a lot with windows xp/2000. Even the latest version of Virus Scan (6.02) has this problem, and I've heard it has something to do with Kazaa running at the same time. Some people say if Kazaa is not open, the problem does not occur. I have Kazaa, and even when I do not have it running actively or in the background, I still get a wbhook32.dll error. McAfee knows nothing about this, and only disabling vscan makes it stop. I got fed up and started using norton, but hope someone will figure out a solution, since I believe McAfee is a better product overall.

I just wish that people that have never experienced these problems would not try to give simple solutions. Most of the people on these forums have tried updating these programs.

With Windows 2000/XP, I recommend getting the latest version.
