Windows Update requires IE 5.5 to run correctly. Windows 2000 Pro has IE 5.0. I tried the site anyway but I was loading with errors.

I had that problem before. Once I installed SP4 I had no more problems with the IE6 installation. Make sure your Win2K Pro has SP4 installed BEFORE you try installing IE6.

whats wrong with IE5x.?

From what I know (and personal experience) IE6x. crashes at times on Windows 2000 and uses more memory/makes the system less responsive.

I tend to just leave IE at the OS default unless its XP in which case I used IE7x.
