Am trying to set up my Compaq Armada M700.

It has IE 5 and will not update to IE 6, when I review my updates under windows update it says it has been installed, but when I check the browser it IE 5. I tried to download IE 6 but it failed several times.

I have full admin on this laptop, and guidance please...

I beleve Tonto thought you had ie6 listed in add/remove programs. If it is listed there, have you tried the repair option that will appear when you select uninstall ie6 from add/remove programs?

I said

<<under windows update it says it has been installed, but when I check the browser it IE 5>>

Not under add/remove, this is the win update listing of items in history, if you remove them from your computer they are removed from the update history.

So I still need IE-5, I founs a copy of IE-5.5 on a CD and have loaded that ok, but can not dowload a copy of IE-6 from MS for some reason.

I can download the set-up file but it fails to complete...

Hi Old Salt. I was aware that you had W2K and I have actually used the procedure on my W2K to repair my IE6. I presumed that fiddling with the registry would to the same to your IE5.
Have you tried to run a repair using your W2K CD? It might do the trick so that you can then update to IE6. In case you are not familiar with the procedure:- Insert your W2K CD. If it loads and displays on the screen click Exit. Then go to Start, Run, type sfc /scannow ,click OK. The program will check for corrupted files and reinstall them. Unfortunately it does not provide a report.
If that does not work then your next step would be a repair using the Win2K CD but you will need to change the booting order of your computer beforehand. When you start up your computer, press the Delete key (sometimes it is F2 or F5) for the BIOS screen to appear. There you will be able to change the booting sequence to CDROM being first. Save and reboot. During the boot you will need to press a key so that it boots off the W2K CD. When choices appear as Install, Repair etc. Choose Repair, then Fast. When finished allow it to reboot to Windows and see if your problem has been resolved. Usually it is.
If it hasn't, then you could repeat the process using Manual repair. This process, however, reinstalls all original files and you will need to update after the process. Click "Yes to All" to replace the existing files with the original ones from the CD. This process will not overwrite your Data files. Windows will now work but you will need to go through the update process again. If you haven't got the SP4 update disk then get one from MS, it's free. When it is finished, while rebooting, change the sequence back to the original one, save and proceed. The Manual method of repair is a better way to go rather than reinstalling your OS and all the third party software all over again. Hope this helps.
