Try reinstalling IE. If you never upgraded to IE6, now would be a good time.

Which SP's are you talking about? For Win 2000? Which SP are you running now? You can easily download & install SP4 if you don't already have it. You should have it saved in case you need to reinstall it anyway. You don't need SP1, 2 or 3.

I supplied the link to SP4...just download it, save it to your hard drive, then double click to install it. Do NOT use Windows Update.

Thanx, yeah i tried that again from your link and got the same message "the file programfiles/internet explorer/connectionwizard is open or in use by another program. Please close all other applications and try again."
Then i go to program files and internet explorer folder is empty...it says access denied and the folder info says 0kb.
Any other ideas?
Thanx for your time!

1. try running a cleaner such as CCleaner. Pay attention during the install & make sure to uncheck the box for Yahoo Toolbar (it's spyware):

2. install & run MalwareByte's Anti-Malware:

3. if that doesn't fix the problem, try running the System File Checker:

sfc /scannow

I believe you'll lose all updates, but since you're trying to install SP4 anyway, it shouldn't be a big deal.

Thanx...yeah i tried that (no malware...already know about toolbar bug)....the scannow said i have missing windows files and wanted me to insert the win2000 disk which i dont have since i bought this computer used...do you think maybe this is not an authorized version of win2000?Would that explain why the IE program folder is empty?

You need a BitTorrent client such as uTorrent to be able to download files. It's basically a file sharing program. The link in response 9 will get you an ISO file that you can burn to a CD using a program such as IMGBURN. Then you can run SFC /SCANNOW & fix your Windows installation.
