Problem started last week, when my Internet explorer was hijacked by some spyware. I ran SPYBOT to get rid of it , but IE 6.1 would no longer work. Just would open to Page cannot be displayed. Meanwhile my email still worked and I could use Netscape with no problems. Well it drove me crazy and I did some searching and found reference to how to fix these errors on Microsoft.com.

I walked through all the steps, which included verifying a registry entry which was correct, and the next step was to uninstall and reinstall TCP/IP…

Well this totally hosed everything.

I can only ping the loop back address.
If I try to do an IPCONFIG /release, I get the rror all adapters bound to DHCP not have DHCPaddresses, The addresses were automatically configured and cannot be released.

IPCONFIG /renew, I get an operation was attempted on something that is not a socket. This appears on something that is listed as a NOC extranet access adapter. (I do have a VPN software installed for a client .)…

I am also getting errors in the event viewer that says the computer was unable to automatically configure the IP parameters for the Network Card. The following error occurred dupring configureation. WSAStartup cannot function at this time because the underlying system it uses to provide network services is currently unavailable.

Have I totally hosed this whole PC and do I need to Start over at square one????(reformat….) God I hope not.

Have you tried to perform a repair to IE? Go to add/remove programs and select IE. click to remove. You will see a screen asking if you want to completely remove, repair the program. Select repair. Next go to device manager and remove your network adapter. Reboot and windows will reinstall your NIC. Supply the drivers if asked. The drivers are already on the system so windows whould find them is you direct it to look for them in C:\winnt. Reboot and use connection wizard. If you are part of a network verify that your NIC is functioning prior to attempting connecting to the internet. If the IE repair failed, remove and reinstall IE.

Thanks for the suggestions, I did remove and reinstall IE and also the network adapter. NO luck there.

Since I uninstalled and reinstalled TCPIP, I can no longer get email or use netscape as well... Anyother thoughts

Remove the above items again and run a registry cleaner to find orphan entries in the registry. Reboot and reinstall. Find Regcleaner here: www.worldstart.com/weekly-download/archives/reg-cleaner4.3.htm
