I have an odd modem problem, and I hope I have time to describe it.

I have been running this OS and a USR V.Everything internal modem flawlessly for about six months. Recently the modem has been disconnecting for unknown reasons. Last week it would disconnect or not let me access the ISP from about 6 pm until 8:45 pm each night. Yesterday, it would not stay connected for more than 3 minutes at any time.

I have been in contact with the ISP and they have assured me they are not having any "problems" (guess I have to believe them even though they said their racks are not completely filled with cards at this time.)

The only modification I have made during this problem time was to adjust or disable certain processes in Computer Services. I still find it odd that this problem is not constant or consistant. It almost seems to be running on a schedule. I have checked all the "add on" programs I have to see if something is checking or updating on a pre-set schedule, but I can find nothing.

One other thing I have thought about is heat. My Mother Board Monitor shows temps in the 30s C for the ambient and high 30s or low 40s CPU during the times I frequently have the problem. Could heat be a cause of the modem disconnecting?

This really gets me because I had great connections and Never got bumped.

Thanks

Mike

Many on-board modem problems seem to be caused by lack of good electrical grounding of the PC (i.e. the chassis needs to be connected to the earth).
Otherwise very high freak electrical currents can run over the telephone wire, causing all sorts of problems.

Mike, you may want to go into Device Mgr and delete/uninstall the modem. On the reboot, the machine will find and reinstall. See if that will do the trick. :-)
