hi, i have 2 computers(internet PC=2000pro, pc2=WinME) at home both with ethernet network cards. one computer is connected to the internet by usb, through a usb or ethernet cable modem. i am currently using the modem via USB but only because i have tried to network the 2 pcs via a crossover cable. the computers can successfully share files (tcp/ip & netbeui installed) but before i can setup the internet connection sharing the internet stops working on the pc with the internet. i have mcafee antivirus & firewall installed on both computers. i have given up on the crossover cable network. i now need to know what to buy if i want to connect the computers to a 'box'-a router/switch/hub. i'm not sure which to use because i dont really know much on the subject. once i get the 'box' it must connect to the cable modem via ethernet or usb. the box then must connect to the computers individually via an ethernet cable. any help, thanks.

You want a router. You can connect the modem to the router's WAN connection and then connect each computer to the router. Use network cables (not crossover cables). This gives the best Flexibility because you do not have to have the computer with the modem connected to it turned on to access the net with the other computer. You could also use a wireless router but you would also have to buy the wireless cards for the computers.

I'd go with a small router with a built in switch.

walmart has this one for about $40

I agree, a router would be the best solution. Here's a link that has excellent instructions for setting it up.
