My mother bought an HP all-in-one printer, copy, scanner at best buy. it will not install. It starts installation, gets most of the way through it, and the setup freezes. it says something like 'device found waiting for installation to finish' or something like that. and just sits there. no disk activity. but the syetm is not frozen and CPU usage is bouncing between 80-100%, according to the task manager. She let it sit for more then an hour to make sure it was not just taking a while. What is going on? It said windows 2000 compatible and she followed the directions but it is just not working. could the USB cable be bad? what is the deal?
Argue for your limitations and sure enough, they're yours.

Is she connecting the all-in-one and then installing? If so, she should install the software first. Then connect the device when prompted to do so.
Soylent Green is PEOPLE!!!

You should go to the HP printer site and download tthe scrubber to remove any bits left over from a failed install, I had the same problem.
After uning my all in one for a year now I would advise you to return it and get another brand, just my opinion, but I WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER HP ANYTHING.

LOL. I'm not a big fan of HP's support. Since the merger with Compaq *gag* it's gone to hell in a handbasket! However, they still make some of the best LaserJet printers on the market.
From a technical point of view, I'd rather repair a Lexmark than an HP any day. Lexmark's are LOT easier to work on.
To be honest, Old Salt feels about HP like I feel about any/all all-in-one printers.
I will say this about any all-in-one printer though. It's never a good idea to put all your eggs in one basket. Should the printer stop working, you can't scan, copy or receive faxes. From a service standpoint. It's rare for any technician to be able to fix those units as well and repairs usually require the unit being sent into HP for repair/replacement. Especially the inkjet type. The turnaround on a repair like that can get to be pretty lengthy.
I have an older HP LaserJet 6L here at home. I also have a separate scanner. The scanner allows me to scan and once scanned, I can make multiple copies of the print job so in effect, it's a copier too. If I felt I needed a fax I'd either use my PC to receive faxes, or, I'd buy a cheap fax machine for under $100 use that. But, I'd NEVER buy an all-in-one piece of junk.
I don't mean to be rude, or belittle your choice, but that's my opinion and I have worked on many printers from small desktops like my own to enterprise class color and monochrome laserjets (from multiple vendors) and I've never seen one all-in-one that I (or any other technician) could fix....they all had to be shipped to HP for repair

can i have a URL for that scrubber to remove old traces?
