Kind of a waste of hardware to consider software raid when you have a hardware raid controller.

Upon bootup the scsi controller bios will come up. It will tell you what key strokes to then go into the raid bios. You have to initialize the drives. Then you create your raid array. Let it complete the build.

Then boot your w2k cd via the bios and install will start. Hit f6 when you see it in the lower left corner and feed install the raid card driver. It will see the drive [in hardware raid a array is reported as a single drive]and proceed with install as normal.

That's it in a nutshell. Look at dell's web site for your controllers docs for more info.

Give a person a fish you feed them for a day.
Ask a person to internet search and they learn a skill for a lifetime.

I checked the bios of my AHA-2940U2W card and there isn't anything in there to configure the raid, so the one I own doesn't support hardware raid, which is why I pointed to the software raid info. However mine is an old card, I bought it in 1998.

If you're looking for performance and you have the same card as I have, it wouldn't be my first choice. There are much better/faster cards available.

yeah. I had no luck doing the RAID over the weekend. I really dont want to and will not do software raid. Ill just use software to BU the data and replicate it to my other server being that i get all the VRTS/Symantec software to do this. Might as well use my Brocade switch. Anyways, Thank You.

Good point. That is not a raid card. I thought Dell used Perc raid controllers.

Backup or replication doesn't address the issues Raid does

Well BU and replication address the issue of fault tolerance. I can always keep 2 copies of all my files on 2 servers and 1 on tapes. I already had a sim system and it worked great.
