I had a virus yesterday (Worm_yaha.e), which changes the registry. I fixed it by renaming regedit.exe to regedit.com and was able to repair the values. But I was wondering, is there a way to change the reg outsinde Windows? I booted from the bootdisks (takes ages) but I couldn't find a program to edit the reg. I am just curious.

You could use a DOS or Win98 boot disk with Edit.com on it if your disk is fat32.

Right! Edit.com to edit the registry? Doesn't seem to be a good idea...

No you can't edit the registry from outside the OS. Would be nice if you could but alas....

Uh...have you guys missed the Remote
Registry Service available and probably even
enabled if you didn't shut it off in Admin
Tools -> Services. It's description says it
all, "Allows remote registry manipulation."
Now gieven that don't ask me what lese you
need in order to actually do this as I have
never tried.

Well, I asked this for the case the system wouldn't boot after a virus or reg problems. Also I wondered if Win 2000 has a registry checker like Win ME has.

Check out this site: http://www.winternals.com, they have a very usefull utility called ERD Commander 2002. I will allow you to boot from a CD edit the registry, start and stop services, reset forgotten passwords and a whole lot more. This saved me a lot of headache when i had unbootable machines.
Good luck.
