I have an Intel pentium lll 600, BX Giga Byte motherboard with a 17G Seagate hard drive and with win98 se installed.
I just bought win2000 upgrade version( not the full version).
I want to make the single hard drive 'multi-bootable' to win98, win2000
and Redhat Linux.
Please advise me how to do this step by step.
( Please excuse my ignorance. I have no experience in using fdisk
or any partition program )
Thanks a lot.

Get your buddy to do it... :)
If you have NO clue, then dont even try.
If you have a small clue, then you have to know what you want. Do you have 2 hard disks or 1 ? Do you have to save your old win98 config ? Anyway, get PQMAGIC and resize your hard disk. Run the win2k setup, and choice advanced - itll ask for upgrade path, so put in your win98 cd - Now tell it to install to the D:\ that pqmagic made. You will now have 2x boot - as far as linux, learn the win98-2k part first, then try that. Most linux install, however, will place LILO on your disk and MOST OF THE TIME set up tripple boot, but dont count on it. Learn how to fix it before you do it. Later

use a prog called "boot magic" that normally always comes with partition magic 4 or 5. it''ll tell ya how to do it etc in the help files.

Don't use any commercial software as suggested above -- RedHat's and Windows' own tools will be sufficient. BootMagic ic crap really, and breaks LILO functionality, for those who want to give it a try..
First -- make sure you have a separate partition for RH Linux (actually two, one will be the swap area) -- sizes like 64 MB for the swap, and 2 GB for Linux will be OK for the start.
Second -- upgrade your w98 to W2K (performing a clean install) -- this will make a dual boot windows loader, that will allow you to choose between w2k and w98
Third -- install RedHat linux on its own partiotion; during the installation process place the LILO bootloader on the MBR (master boot record) of your disk. LILO will have two entries - one for linux and the other for windows. If you choose to load windows in LILO, you'll be shown the windows native OS chooser, that will allow you to choose between 2000 and 98. The windows loader is not really a bootloader -- that's why it loads in the second stage...
This works for me..
