Comment: Hi I know how to format, and copy Win98 to the hard drive, and from there install it. However, Now I must learn how to do all this with Win2000. I realise that 2000 is NTFS and that makes me doubt that it will be the exact same format, copy, and install reutine that I am so familar with in Win98. I need a step by step guide to understand what I will be doing. Please advise. Thanks

Reply: (edit)Hi. I am curious as well, but you want some info. You are familiar with fdisk and formating etc from your post. Do as you have always done, boot and format with a W98 floppy. Put your W2K disk into the drive and change to that drive (normally E:\ because the boot disk will have used D:\). Copy E:\i386 C: This will take a little while. When its finished change to the E: drive, cd i386 then type winnt. This will start the installation BUT.. it will take an age. You need to find a copy of smartdrv.exe (google) and copy that to your C:\ drive before you start. NTFS does not come automatically with W2K. You will be given the choice during install. Why not just boot from the W2K CD and let it sort itself out? Hope this is of some use. ChrisE

Reply: (edit)One good reason not to do it from the CD is, if you install from the hard drive, you can slipstream the service pack into the install files before the install. That's my preferred method.
