In W98 we could change the startup screen by placing a bitmap named LOGO.SYS in C:\.

Is there a way to change the startup screen in W2K? Does anybody know in which file it is stored?

Thx Roland

First head over to www.littlewhitedog.com to and read their article on this to get a general idea of the process and to view dozens of screens created by other people. If you are running SP2 then you will need to approach this a little differently, as in the instructions below.

Login as admin.

Install Cabman2001 and Resource Hacker.

Create or find a 640x480 16 color bitmap.

Open up explorer and go to Tools -> Folder Options -> View -> Uncheck “Show hidden files and folders”. Once you've finished this whole process go back and recheck this if you want.

Browse to c:\winnt\Driver Cache\i386 and double click on the sp2.cab file. This should open up in winRAR. Click "Extract to" and click "ok". This will unpack the files to the c:\winnt\Driver Cache\i386\SP2 directory. Close winRAR. Browse into the newly created directory and copy the ntoskrnl.exe file to the desktop.

Run Resource Hacker. Click File -> Open -> Open the ntoskrnl.exe file you copied to the desktop. Click on the directory tree and browse to Bitmap -> 1 -> 1033. You should see your current startup screen here. Go to Action -> Replace Bitmap -> Open file with new bitmap -> browse and select the new startup screen. Click replace. Go to Bitmap -> 1 -> 1033 to verify that the new picture has been added. Go to File -> Save. This will create a new file called ntoskrnl_original.exe. This can be used as a backup should anything go wrong. Close Resource Hacker.

Copy the ntoskrnl.exe file into the c:\winnt\Driver Cache\i386\sp2 directory overwritting the original. Run Cabman2001. Click Add. Browse to the c:\winnt\Driver Cache\i386\sp2\ directory. Highlight all of the files, click Open. Click Save. Enter sp2 for the filename. Click Save. The files will compress, this should take just a minute. The new sp2.cab file should be located on the desktop. Close Cabman.

Copy the new sp2.cab file over the one in c:\winnt\Driver Cache\i386. Copy the new ntoskrnl.exe file into the c:\winnt\Driver Cache\i386, c:\winnt\system32, and c:\winnt\ServicePackFiles\i386, in that order.

Reboot to see your new startup screen.
