How to change screen size

Hi,
On Dell Latitude laptops how can one get to a full screen? In other words, when the unit boots up the total screen size is only a small window directly in the center (sort of like those foreign films that are formatted to be very narrow....it isn't using the full area available. I don't thnk it is a display settings problem. Any suggestions?

im not to fluent with computers but with like destop monitors theres usualy bottons that can expand your screen size. also with some video cards (like nvidia) you can go to the settings and adjust it there

Unfortunately that's not an option but thanks for offering to assist.
An associate told me it sounds like someone might have plugged an external monitor to the rear of the unit and it picked up new settings that way? If so, how to revert back to original settings? I've scoured the BIOS and didn't see anything to work with.
