Subject: how to backup/restore W2K registry ?
Comment:

Hello :

i wanted to make a bat file for backing up
the W2K registry files.
they are located at : (H is my bootdisk ,
normally C:\)

H:\WINNT\system32\config\*.*

so i made the bat file and it started
to backup BUT then i got "being used by another process errors"

1) How to avoid these ?

2) How to restore (make the restore.bat file) ?

Thanks
Theo

Go to Start ... Run.. type in regedit

then you can export or import your win2k registries from there

Gavin : Thanks !

On aumha.org i found : ERUNT version 1

that also looks like working BUT :

when i export the ALL reg (your solution)i get a 22MB file

and when I run ERUNT only about 11MB .

a) any idea what the difference might be ?

b) And : how do i restore the registry when
I cannot boot ? (not a momentary problem).

c) How to use the recovery console ?

d) Use of ERD-disk is also a question.

Thanks again anyway !

Theo

Here what I've read.....

a) any idea what the difference might be ?

The difference might be that the ERUNT does not copy files that are in use of by the registry at the moment of back up. It could also be compressing the file by 50%. Also, it is my understanding that the regedit does not copy all files used by the registry simply because it is using them at the moment of backup. From what I've read you have to have a dual boot system to make a complete copy.

b) And : how do i restore the registry when
I cannot boot ? (not a momentary problem).

What you want to do is go into the windows back up program and setup a system state backup. So that you can "boot to the last know good configuration" You would have to back it up on a regular basis. Otherwise, if you machine is totaly screwed, you will have reinstall you OS and then run the Windows back up program and restore the registry. Note that you will have to load any service packs that you had installed on the original machine or it WILL CRASH.

c) How to use the recovery console ?

The recovery console can either be run off the CD or the Hard Drive. However, if you want to run it off the hard drive, you will need to install it. Widows, does not install it by default during setup. Once you are at the recovery console it acts very much like the dos prompt. In fact most of the commands are the same. Note that you will be prompted to enter the original admin password that was set at setup, NOT the one you have currently. So if you changed your admin password at anytime after the original installation, you better remember the original or your screwed.

d) Use of ERD-disk is also a question.

The ERD has the basic files that will let your machine boot. It also has a copy of the registry. So you have to keep and up to date copy of ERD readily available. Other than that, I don’t really know how to use it. I have never needed to use it but it would be a good idea to test it out in the near future.

I am currently attempting to create a back up and recovery plan for my company. If anyone has any further input on what I’ve said I would very much appreciate it.

Drew :

1) Thanks for your time and input.

TL : maybe it isnot copying the *.bak files
but i will look again.
i tested it and it looks like working ok.

b) And : how do i restore the registry when
I cannot boot ? (not a momentary problem).

What you want to do is go into the windows back up program and setup a system state backup. So that you can "boot to the last know good configuration"

TL : this i didnot know : does W2K finds
also the system state if you put it on another drive ? and what if you have more
then one system state backupped ?

BTW : F8 and LKGC saved me already 3 times !

TL : important remark !

c) How to use the recovery console ?

The recovery console can either be run off the CD or the Hard Drive. However, if you want to run it off the hard drive, you will need to install it. Widows, does not install it by default during setup. Once you are at the recovery console it acts very much like the dos prompt. In fact most of the commands are the same. TL : my question wasnot good : had to be :

What can you do with the RC in a disaster situation : i know you are at the Command Prompt and have a lot of options with the
Help but you cannot (?) change directories
and what do you do when you are there ?
i found some input on that.

d) Use of ERD-disk is also a question.

The ERD has the basic files that will let your machine boot.

It also has a copy of the registry.

TL : NO ! that wouldnot be possible because
the registry is at least 10MB or so.

i found input on that as well.

So you have to keep and up to date copy of ERD readily available.

TL : this is VIP yes !

Other than that, I don’t really know how to use it. I have never needed to use it but it would be a good idea to test it out in the near future.

TL : i actually did this yesterday and tested
an ERD repair and : i was very happy to made

=before testing=

a system state backup because

i couldnot start Outlook express and got a nasty : Outlook express couldnot be started
because MSOE.DLL couldnot be loaded !!

for a moment i thought : OEPS back in the
DLL-HELL :) a restore of my system state
saved me again !!

SO : backup for you are testing something
new !
AND : make notes of the things you are doing
because this is a probably not much
used process which you easily forget
and these notes can save you a lot of time ! and will ease your "troubled mind".

I am currently attempting to create a back up and recovery plan for my company. If anyone has any further input on what I’ve said I would very much appreciate it.

TL : Drew you got my email by now.

others : look at langa.com

Thanks again Drew !
