from John Savills's faqs at:
http://www.windows2000faq.com - installations section; gives a 'slightly more detailed' how to...
You 'can' preconfigure/preformat the drive if you wish using a '98 boot-disk (Fdisk/format utils); afterwhich install W2K.
It's often useful (wiser...?) to have both Primary and Extended partitions; Primary for OS/apps/uitls; Extended for data. In event of a crash, and need to re-install to Primary (even reformat it...) data is (should be) safe in Extended partition.

Regardless of how you go about installing W2K - first run the chkupgrd.exe util (on the CD - usually). It will generate a report on what is/isn't OK for W2K; afterwhich obtain all required updates - before starting W2K set-up. The util can be run from any installed OS; and 'probably' via a boot-disk (with CDROM support) boot-up.
