How do I compare directories?

I'm trying to find a quick and easy way to compare the contents of one directory with another. The directory may contain sub-directories. I need it to identify files which have been modified as well as those which have been added or removed. I'm just having problems trying to keep track of what files I've changed. Many thanks in advance.
Note: I thought that this might be done through the command prompt so I submitted this originally through the DOS forum.

My method, when I need to do the same as you, is to use ZTree (sucessor of the legendary XTree), divide the screen into two panels and do a directory comparison (it´s an embedded function inside the program)
