How do I check if a port is open ?

Anyone know how I can check if a port is open please, I cant get any jsp so I want to check port 8080 is there a dos prompt command for this ?

yea,
just use telnet ( ex: telnet xx.xx.xx.xx 8080 ) from a workstation

telnet 127.0.0.1 8080
is being meant here.
127.0.0.1 = localhost most of the case :)
