How can I play .avi files

hello y'all. I've got some movies on my computer , but the problem is that they are of the type .avi and my windows media player always comes up with an error each time I try to play any of this files. Could anyone pls help me out with the procedures to follow in order to be able to view these kind of movie files.

are they of divx or smr format -- these have .avi extensions -- && have you installed the divx or smr codec? also, are they completely downloaded, if downloaded they were? otherwise you won't be able to view it
