Hi,
I've seen postings like this one in other groups but have not yet found a solution that works for me. I'm using Windows 2000 and have recently found that I am unable to access hotmail, windows update and also cannot sign into my msn messenger. I don't get any real error messages, it's just that the browser appears to stall and no Updates occur, no access to email is given and messenger does not initialize. I have tried from other computers at work and among friends and do not have the same problem. It just seems to be my home computer. Any solutions as to what I could do? Thanks,

the service required for your programs are:
Automatic updates
Intelligent Background Transfer service
Messenger - for hotmail and messengerthere's more so I've got to think, but in the mean time check and make sure these are enabled.

umm i have all 3 of those disabled i have no problems.i think u need to have the rpc services running <remote procedure call>
i had it turned off once experimenting with services and couldnt access hotmail.try that enable rpc.go to start>settings>>control panel>>administative tools>>services>> scroll to rpc and enable it.that should do the trick.but if im wrong someone will correct me.

hi,
i have the exact same problem. I have all the 3 services enabled and running and also rpc is enabled but still i cannot access hotmail or msn messenger. I had recently installed some updates from automatic updates and since then my automatic updates, hotmail and msn messenger are not working.
help

hmm. ok i just signed up for hotmail and no probs. I have only 5 services enabled and the above isn't one of them...so I retract my earlier statement..for the hotmail portion..I read that somewhere
Messenger service is slightly different than MSN messenger. This is to send messeges using "net send user /messege" from command prompt, however MSN Messenger uses something from this servic, i dunno what, but it won't let me stop this service from my GFs computer.
You have the latest IE browser? I have 6.0 right now. and SP4 for Win2K. Quite possibly messenger runs partially in a Netbios port, so if you have a firewall, its being blocked.
