I have a IBM T21 Laptop. It comes with a docking station, that lets you hook a keyboard to it. The laptop it self does not have a keyboard input (ps/2). It does have a ps/2 port for the mouse(on the laptop).

I have a ps/2 to serial converter that i would like to hook a keyboard through. So basically i am hooking a keyboard to my laptop's serial port. Is that posiable? It shows up as PCI Serial Port in device manager, how would i get it to see it as a keyboard?

Thanks

A PS/2 port on a laptop will accept either a mouse OR a keyboard.

If the laptop has a USB port, you could connect a mouse to USB, and a keyboard to PS/2.

I guess my laptop doesn't know that, when i do hook my keyboard to the mouse PS/2 on the back of the laptop, it thinks the keyboard is the mouse, and i can actually move the mouse by hitting a lot of keys on the keyboard together.

Try this...
Go to Device Manager and look under "Mice..."
Remove the item referring to PS/2 mouse.
Turn off the laptop, and remove the PS/2 mouse.
Hook up your external keyboard to the PS/2 port.
Hook up a USB mouse.
Then reboot.

Any joy ?

Hi drweird13

Did some research on Google, and it seems that some IBM Thinkpads need a Y-splitter PS/2 cable, in order to use both a PS/2 mouse and keyboard.

Maybe IBMs have an issue with PS/2 inter-changeability ?

The PS/2 Y-splitter for an IBM might just have to be a genuine IBM one though !
Which means 3 times the price of a garden-variety one !!
