Hello all
I just built a new pc. AMD XP2400,MSI nforce2 chipset mobo running windows 2000. I've tried everything in my power and I cant get my Hi-Val 56k Modem to work correctly. It will install and recognize the modem and even dialup but the isp wont answer it. The modem doesn't sound right, it's has a lot of static. I know how this modem should sound because I have it on my other pc,an older compaq also running windows 2000 and it works fine. So by saying that I know it's not a hardware issue.I've tried the modem in my new pc in the old one and it works fine. I tried the hival driver page but didn't see any drivers for the nforce2 chipsets. Anybody help anyone could give me would be greatly appreciated. I've had problems getting modems to work in the past but I've never had one that would install and even dialup but still not work. I'm totally stumped...Please help

I doubt this will help, weird problem for sure but: Some MSI MB's depending on the BIOS will have a spot for Enable/Disable onboard modem. I have seen a problem with a modem not dialing out because of this. Keep in mind, this computer did not even have an onboard modem, but it was still listed as a BIOS setup option, and turning it to disable fixed the problem, was having a weird IRQ prob. HOWEVER... I would bet the same as you are that it has to do with the nforce2 chipset. Try the above first, if that doesn't work (may have to uninstall/reinstall the modem just to be sure)contact HiVal and see if they have a work around or any issues with the nforce2 chipset. Best I got man, weird stuff :)

I don't know what Windows 2000 has in the way of packaged drivers for this modem, but it looks to me as though the drivers you'll want to use would come from http://www.hival.com/Modem-DRIVERS.htm -- either those for Windows 2000 for the ESS chipset (PCI) or the V92 Enhanced drivers for the same.

Note that those drivers are for the ESS chipset, and won't work if you have the PcTel Chipset -- they don't support the PcTel chipset on Win2k (dealing with a lack of WinModem support for Win2k was a problem for me back when I used a modem). What driver is your Compaq computer using for this modem? I would assume your modem has the ESS chipset if another Win2k computer has no problem with it.
