Comment:

I am running an all W2K network with AD etc.....

Here is my issue:

Each user has a home directory on GFP server. Login scripts map user to necessary directory. All directories have NTFS permissions permitting only domain admins and associated user access.

The structure is as follows:

\\server\hiddenshare$\user

Only the hidden share is shared to the network the script matches the user name to the appropriate directory. The user directories have NTFS security to prevent unauthorized access.

The users I support are notoriously nosey and what I am proposing to do is hide the share location from them in "My Computer".

When the share is mapped, My Computer shows "joe.bloe on \\server\hiddenshare$". I want to find a way to only show "joe.bloe" and not the server share.

Any ideas?

hide each user's folder instead the folder above it.. this is what i do:

\\server\username$

this may or may not be a good idea for you depending on how many users you have at this point. Also if the users were to pick up on this scheme i also set rights for these hidden shares to domain admins and the user themself.

I agree. It doesn't matter what the share names are. If you set the share in the above format and set permissions to DA's and the particular user, then someone would have to know the EXACT user folder to access, and then would STILL get an "access denied" error.
