Comment: Someone please help- I installed windows 2000 pro on my 20 gig hard drive. I planned on not using windows 98 at all anymore, but then a few of my games and programs wouldnt work with 2000, so I decided to try to dual boot 2000 and 98. I formatted my hard drive and installed 2000. I then bought another hard drive and put 98 on it and followed directions on how to dual boot them. Now when I boot up my machine I have the option to choose 2000 or 98 (like i should). The problem is when I choose 98, i only get to the 98 desktop about 1/4 times. 98 starts to load (splash screen shows) and then it seems to stop. After a little while, it turns to a black dos-like screen with only a flashing cursor in the upper left corner (no c:\ prompt or anything). After it does that it just stays like that indefinitely, i can ctrl-alt-del and restart it and "roll the dice" to hope win 98 will actually start up. Then, sometimes when 98 does start up, all of the video settings get messed up and it drops me down to 16 colors and 640 x 480 resolution. I can then change it, and restart my machine, then its another roll of the dice to see if 98 can come up again. Windows 2000 boots up perfectly every time, i've never had a problem with it. My machine specs are: Gateway P3 550, 128 MB ram TNT2 video soundblaster live value 13 gig IBM hard drive 20 gig Quantum hard drive Please help! Email or respond to this msg!

Reply: (edit)If I were you i'd install Win98 as primary boot partition on any harddrive and then install Win2000 with a clean install, installed on another partition. This helped me. Any questions just email me.

Reply: (edit)Why don't you use a boot manager like XOSL (www.xosl.org), Ranish Partition Manager (www.users.intercom.com/~ranish/part) or Master Booter (www.masterbooter.com) ?

Reply: (edit)which drive is the first drive in your ide chain? Windows 95,98,ME (9x)have to be in the c:\ drive, ie the Master drive on ide 0, and have to be stored in a primary, bootable partition. if this is the case a boot program should let you choose between each os.
