sounds to me like you have a virus, my friend. Run Spybot Search & Destroy and/or AdAware6 (both freeware), after obtaining and running the w32.welchia.worm fix from symantec.com or elsewhere... good luck!

My cpu on a Windows 2000 system hits 100% every 12 seconds, which is a vast improvement from the constant 100% usage which it had before. This was corrected by running Fixblast.exe which removed the svchost.exe related virus, Fixwelch.exe which removed the welchia worm, Coolweb which removed the abobot.s worm (worms which PC Cillin never found), Ad-aware, and Spybot. It has been noted on other forums that svchost.exe is actually Microsoft spyware, which may be why Microsoft is so silent about how to "fix" [read: remove] it. This might not be so bad if all it did was slow down programs every 12 seconds, but it actually causes some windows (like the program removal window, and the cmd window) to just disappear without warning, AND if it's proven that Microsoft is monitoring me through some slick trojan, I'm switching to Unix, no matter how painful that might be.
