I'm getting an EXTREEMLY LONG delay whenever I right click. The shortcut menu doesn't come up for 30-45 seconds! Any one else had this problem? Sounds like a registry fix but don't know where. HELP!

you may want to look at your system tray and available memory. You may have alot of programs running that you aren't aware of. Close any unneccessary programs then try it again. Also, set your pagefile to 1.5-2 times the memory in your machine. Set it for the C: drive and put the same number in for minimum and maximum. ex) 256MB RAM...set it to minimum 500 and maximum 500 for your paging file size. To do this click on start, settings, system, advanced, performance options, change, enter the size you want and click set. If you don't click set before you click ok, then it will not work. Reboot
Hope this helps.Rodney

Nope, that didn't work. I only had 3 items in the system tray anyway. Changed my performance settings to 574 and 574 with 256 of memory. Used Set. Rebooted but I still have the same problem. Any other ideas?

It's not memory usage, that's very low. Left click is speedy, files open quickly, pages refresh quickly. The problem is fairly isolated to right clicking. The one other place I see a delay is when I click on the start menu. There, too, a 30 sec delay and then another delay to select an item in the list. I changed menustartdelay to zero but that didn't help. I downloaded a utility to change a reg setting that clears valueless entries for right click explor. That didn't work, but it helped with other speed issues. This is a 2 week old machine. Others like it in the office are doing fine. Same programs loaded on this as others. Any other ideas?

I had the almost same problem last night.
I fixed it by uninstalling the program "Stuffit". Maybe you have program something like that...
My case, when I hit the right mouse button, my computer will check either A: or CD drives and it will just stuck there.Perhaps "Stuffit" was looking for the places to send the file and... well I guess it's not designed to work with w2k.
I had to suffer for about six hours and... as soon as I undeleted that program, w2k works like a magic.
Good luck.

I have the same problem. I'm running W2k and eperience it everywhere within the OS but I notice that it's a lot worse in Internet Explorer 6.0. It seriously sometimes takes almost a minute for the context menu to appear. I'm not sure if it's an online or a network issue or not but if I find anything out, I'll post back here...

Try this. Go to HKey Current User/Control Panel/Desktop. There will be a Key called MenuShowDelay it will have a decimal value. The lower the value, the quicker the menu pops up. Try a setting of 10 or lower. This might not be your problem, but its worth a try.

Hi, I use to have a simialar problem.
Is the delay only happening while right clicking in IE? If so I assume you got mcafee anti-virus version 4.5 or lower? If so upgrade your anti-virus to 4.5.1 sp1, or higher.
Hope that help

I had a similar problem with a machine running Win2K. It seems that after I upgraded my version 4.5 scan engine to 4.1.60, the delay began. Upgraded to McAffee 4.5.1, sp1, and that solved the problem.
Couldn't find any info on McAffee web site, but could be a problem with the scan engine upgrade?

I went to the VirusScan console and disabled "v-shield" the "rightclick delay" ended at that moment. Thanks for your help folks! :)

I have the same problem...
I put down the Start Menu delay but it doesn't work.
I used Tweak XP but it doesn't work.Start menu delay is 19 sec, right click delay is 29 sec and when xp starts up I cannot open the start menu for two minutes.
I searched the whole Internet for the solution, but I did't find it.
Please let me know when you have the answer.
Thx.
Phancy.

Its defiantly McAffee that is causing the problem for me. Once I disabled it, right-clicks are speedy under IE.

I have this problem too, but on a XP system.
Try to disable the TCP protocol. It will works fine.
The problem (me too) is that you cannot work with tcp... I'm still having this problem, and nobody knows why.
Regards from Spain.

Xtian! I don't know what the standard protocol in Spain is but normally, you cannot GET online without TCP/IP!
My problem pretty much only occurs when I'm online although I've noticed that the delay doesn't apply to Windows operations while I'm online.
For example, it takes at least 7 seconds for the context menu to pop up when I r-click a link within a web page but it only takes a millisecond(?) if I right click inside the IE address bar while I'm on that very same page. Weird, huh?
