Subject: Help me with my computer.
OS: Windows 2000 professional
CPU/Ram: How do you find this out?
Model/Manufacturer: IBM/M Pro - I guess
Comment:
I got a computer from this kid that was just going to throw it out. I don't know much about computers and need help. The first thing I need help with is I don't know what it is. I know it is made by IBM. It says M Pro on the front and has a Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional sticker on it. Not sure what all that means. But the main problem is when I press power the fans, lights, CD drives and a few other stuff comes on. The kid says he thinks the motherboard got wet. There is some kind of speaker with 2 cables running into different parts of the mother board and this speaker beeps about 5 times when I first turn it on. The monitor acts like it isn't even plugged into the computer. There is no onboard video card. I have tried it with several different monitors. I'm not sure if there is something wrong with the video card, motherboard, or if it something completely different. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Well, if this is your first computer, or your first attempt at computer repair, it'll be as difficult (or simple) as trying to fix a broken TV with zero experience.

Water won't necessarily damage a motherboard, but powering up a wet board would almost certainly finish it off by shorting it (and could even be dangerous)
If you believe the board to be wet, don't use it until you are sure it's dry.

Still, beeping indicates it's working well enough to complain - beep codes can vary greatly, depending on manufacturer & model, but they all mean something - plenty here to look at

You might also want to examine the board itself for damaged capacitors (bad caps)

Naturally, all cards, memory sticks and cables need to be snugly connected, and any fans present need to be working.

Conventional wisdom is to strt with a minimal configuration - disconnect any drives and remove any add-in cards (other than video & RAM) and see if the machine will start to the 'POST' screen or CMOS setup. Once that's achieved, reconnect items one-at-a-time to try and determine which is defective or somehow preventing a normal start

Maybe these troubleshooting flowcharts will help

While the machine may (or may not) actually have Win2000 installed, this is more of a hardware question than one for the Win2K forum

Look, 'Griff' - regardless of where you 'should' have posted, you started a dialog here, and you're expected to continue in this thread - not hare off and start a series of new posts in another forum - those were deleted as per the site rules (which I'd suggested you look at). It's also... well, kind of impolite to wander away like that - this may be your first time in a forum, but they all have rules and codes of conduct, most not terribly different than the ones here.

So... no, dropping a different hard drive into this computer does not really make it a 'new' problem - we just call that 'progress'
