Subject: Help! Inaccessible boot deviceOS: Win2000proCPU/Ram: Sempron 2800+Model/Manufacturer: ECS nForce3-A |
Comment: I switched out my mobo and tried to boot and received the inaccessible boot device message. I now realize that Win2000 prohibits a motherboard switch. I've looked around and found all the procedures for getting around this problem. I've tried to boot using Recovery Console and disabling IDE drivers but it didn't work (I must admit that that I'm not certain which drivers to disable though). I don't really care about data on the drive as there is nothing irreplacable, but I can't find my Win2000 disk in order to reinstall the OS. Can somebody please help? In Recovery Console I've disabled: atapi, atdisk, pci ide, pci. Am I missing something? Also... In recovery console I tried chkdsk /f and it didn't recognize it. I tried chkdsk /r and it couldnt locate autochk.exe I copied this file from my XP system to a floppy and directed my 2000 system to a:\autochk.exe it starts to check and then goes blue and says: STOP: c0000139 {entry point not found} The procedure entry point RtlUnhandledExceptionFilter could not be located in the dynamic link library ntdll.dll I do NOT have the win2000 cd (not that i can find anyhow). Help!

Reply: (edit)Usual solution seems to be a Repair Installation, via a CD (or 4 floppies + CD) boot... Do not use recovery console approach... However a more detailed set of options is at: http://www.windowsreinstall.com/install/other/motherboard/win2k.htm

Reply: (edit)"I now realize that Win2000 prohibits a motherboard switch" Not true - IF your Windows 2000 was using an IDE controller driver for your old motherboard, that is why you are getting "inaccessable boot device". Anytime you move OS from one motherboard to another, especially Win2000 or XP, FIRST revert or make sure the install is using the generic (standard) IDE controller drivers. Also, I assume the install was using the same drive letter on your old motherboard. WILL POST FOR FOOD.

Reply: (edit)Try checking the cable. Sounds like it's on the hd backwards. Happens all the time. Larry Today seems like a good day to chew through the restraints.
