I'm using Windows 2000 pro where It seems to be stuck in some kind of logon loop after a type the user name and password.
And the problem exists for ALL my profiles. Not even the Admin can login. After typing in the password, all the settings proceed correctly... However just as it says loading settings... the Welcome to windows logon box re-appears thus asking me to type in the password AGAIN.Funny thing is... i can see all the files on the "C" just fine from another computer on my local network. If i could just copy i file over to fix the problem... that would be GREAT!... any ideas? I'm getting VERY SCARED... i don't want to re-install.
Would a repair disk from another windows2000 work to fix the problem? Please help

A brief trawl for this condition brings up a few suggestions that RAM may be a little flakey (try each stick in turn - min of 128Meg) - though I tend to put this low on my list...
One or two hits even blame SP4 for the problem...
Seems the usual "fix" is a repair installation, i.e. a non-destructive re-install - essentially checks for damaged files and replaces them...?

If i boot into Safe Mode here is what happens....
I still get a logon screen. Which i thought was crazy... so even in safe mode i type in Administrator and the password. The system takes it.
Then windows takes it. HOWEVER ALL OF A SUDDEN the Logon Screen comes back up AGAIN.
I can't believe my eyse... EVEN IN SAFE MODE i still get the Logon Loop... I've never seen ANYTHING like this.
I checked the Ram and it is Fine.
Tell me more what i should try? Although a non-destructive install with emphasis on "non-distructive" would be a possibility.
Are we sure that would work? Has anyone tried that for this Logon Loop situation before? Also what blows my mind is i can still see the files from another computer. If i could only re-copy a file over to it.
I feel doomed.

do a repair reinstall
Give a person a fish you feed them for a day.
Ask a person to internet search and they learn a skill for a lifetime.

I'm assuming your PCs are networked.
From your other computer, run regedit and connect to the looping PC's registry.
Navigate to here...
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
Look for the UserInit key on the right side and make sure that it is pointing to this path...
"C:\WINNT\system32\userinit.exe," (sans quotes)
You can try removing the "," at the end or you can leave it. Mine has the "," at the end.
Reboot and try logging in.

YES!... YES!!!! YES!!!!!!!
THAT WORKED!!!
Houston we have CPU!!!!
I fixed this from my other computer that still had a valid network connection to the LOOPING CPU by navigating toHKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
And Noticed that the USERINIT.exe HAD NO PATH! SOOOOO...
i typed the following of
C:\WINNT\system32\userinit.exe,
for the path... did a cold Reboot on the looping computer and this time when the O'L Millinium Falcon fired... WE WARPED RIGHT IN! and we got pass the Dreaded LOGON LOOP... it LOOPS NO MORE!ALL IS WELL NOW!
ITS TIME TO BACKUP.. BACKUP... BACKUP...
YES! THANK Everyone in the forum and Book Mark this post for all those this CRAZY Looping may happen too.
