In order to get some programs to run again after initial use, I have to reboot the system. In particular, AOL but others as well. I am not talking about connecting to the internet, but bringing up the initial AOL screen. Programs won't open by shortcut or directly either. I have reinstalled these programs and have run the repair function of my Win2K disk but the problem persists.

I have seen similar behavior at work with standard software. Tried re-installing applications... but problem persisted. Recreating the Windows User's profile did the trick.
Give this a try.

Worked out Isabelle's suggestion but to no avail. Would appreciate any other suggestions for this annoying problem. Thanks in advance. Campy
