Hello,
I have an HP Pavilion 8590c with Windows 98 SE, and I am considering installing Windows 2000 on it. I understand that I will need to install third-party CD-burning software for my CD-RW drive.
I was at the HP website making sure I have all the necessary drivers and such when I came across a free download from HP...CD-burning software for Windows 2000, called HP Record Now and HP Direct Letter Access.

HP Record Now:
http://www.hp.com/cposupport/information_storage/software/ahprn3en.exe.html

HP DLA (Direct Letter Access):
http://www.hp.com/cposupport/information_storage/software/adla25en.exe.html

I'm sure they're probably pretty basic, but all I really want to do with my CD-RW is copy to disk like a floppy, and the occasional copy of audio or data disk. I don't really need all the extras like automatic backups, CD label maker, etc. So this may be all I need.
I was just wondering if anybody here has ever tried this software for their CD-RW, and how good/bad it actually is.

I'm running the Record Now software on my box at work. Burns CDs just fine for me. It's not a real fancy set of software, but it seems to do ok, haven't had any problems with it so far.....

Yeh, I am running also. With an old external HP drive. I have had a few problems though with it crashing the PC. For simple operations it seems ok, but I am not sure how stable it is when doing a lot of copying accross etc. Also using Record now it a bit limiting, nothing like Nero.

I have it on my machine. I am currently looking for 3rd party software to replace it. Seems like the recording volumes are way too low once you take the CD out of the burner and then try to listen to it on an audio player.

Anyone else having this same problem?

I recieved Record Now with a new 8200 series USB burner from HP and am VERY frustrated that it does not support recording from network drives!!! Does anyone have a fix for this (other than copying files to local HD and then burning)? I am not really interested in buying Roxio's CD Creator Deluxe for $100!

Does anyone know why you can't record entire folders with Record Now?? With the old HP MyCD you could choose to record files OR folders, but with Record Now it says record files and folders and when you choose folders it goes down a level and you have to highlight each and every file in the folder. What's the deal with this?
Does anyone know where I can download the updated version of HP MyCD (with the time elapsed feature); I have HP MyCD v.2.0

I have it installed. It's OK (and recently upgraded to v3.5). I'm currently experimenting with Drive Letter Access (DLA). So far I have experienced two problems:

1) If you insert a CD-RW formatted by DirectCD, it is not immediately recognised as a UDF CD. Instead you get the Adaptec popup saying it needs to install the Adaptec UDF reader software. If you ignore the message (close the dialog) and open/explore the CD all is well.
2) If you change CD-RW's it rarely recognises the change of CD. You either see the previous CD's directory, or it shows as a blank CD. I've had to do a logoff/logon to get it to recognise the new CD!
