Subject: Hard Drive error-Data format is RAWOS: win 2k advanced serverCPU/Ram: p3/256mb |
Comment: I have an 80 gb hard drive that i need to recover if possible.. it was working fine and i restarted my system and it gives me the error that the data format is RAW, and cannot be accessed... I have tried accessign this on different OS's, win2k, winxp, mac osx, linux mandrake... internally and through an external USB hard drive case... no luck.. i have used DOS utilities, and they all say the disk needs formatted.... does anyone have any ideas here? i have over 40 gb of stuff that i dont really want to lose... any help is appreciated.. t.i.a.

Reply: (edit)One thing i will add is that i did try copying the binary data from the backup boot sector to override the MBR (dont remember exactly what i did, but i used a tutorial that i found somewhere) and that didnt work either...

Reply: (edit)Although the MBR replacement does work in some cases, it won´t work here because one thing is the MBR (Master Boot Record) and another is the FAT (File Allocation Table) for FAT volumes or MFT (Master File Table) for NTFS volumes. This means that a disk with a corrupt MBR should still be browseable from another OS if it had a correct FAT/MFT. So... where do you get that "raw" error message?. What system says so?. Win2K?. Where?. I´ll be checking this message from time to time for reposts. Andrés

Reply: (edit)Can you say the exact error message that Windows gave to you?. If so, one thing to do for starters is to go to http://support.microsoft.com and search for that error message in the Knowledge Base. Andrés
