I'm not sure you can set different parameters if you are talking about when the scroll bar is walking across the start up window.

But I would be careful with this machine as I believe from what I read in your post that this is not the first time this has happened.

Could be an indicator of a hd going bad. Back up your data just in case and run a disk utility just to see if it's reporting bad sectors and the such.

If it is, you may want to install a new drive before this one crashes.

Any other info you can give us on the symptoms would be very helpful.

Well, I can´t tell you how to make the initial scan to avoid deleting files automatically, but nevertheless there are two considerations:

1. If chkdsk deletes your files, it is because they could case more damages to other files as well. Sooner or later, automatically or by hand, these files have to be erased.

2. You should try to see the event log for clues because something is wrong in the shutdown process. Or else it´s a bad configuration, or else it´s a bad hard disk... new or old they all fail sooner or later ;).

I just re-read your original post and it says that you have this problem when you DON'T shut down properly.

First, not shutting down properly can create lost clusters and broken files, which are what Windows is trying to clean up after an improper shut down.

And if this has happened hundreds of times, why are you not shutting down properly?

Is there another problem?

What service pack are you running on Windows 2000? Windows 2000 is a very stable and efficient operating system, however I had all kinds of errors and problems with it (including a blue screen here and there) before I applied any service packs after the initial installation. I recommend going to Microsoft's website and downloading the Windows 2000 Service Pack 3 if you haven't yet.

well.. i try to shut down properly when i finish using my pc. but sometimes the screen just goes black then i have 2 reset my pc then it goes to that screen scan disk. anyway the files i am losin r not bad files, they will not harm my pc and will not have 2 b deleted.
how do i check the log for clues or c what files that have been deleted.

I must say that whether a file is corrupt or not exceeds the matter of if it contains a virus (for example) or not. *Any* corrupt file should be corrected as soon as possible in a hard disk. It could mean a corruption of the FAT/MFT and that could lead to other hard disk errors as well. If your chkdsk erases those files, it's not because of them, but because of the danger their condition represents.

try this! right click my computer go to hardware then device manager dbl click computer and see if it says acpi or standard computer! if its standard computer then update driver to acpi this is only a guess but i had a similar problem and this fixed
it! the way win2k saw my computer it saw it as a at/standard pc when it should have been
acpi!
