My IBM Thinkpad R31 laptop does not have a PS2 port. I just plugged in a cheap PS2 keyboard into a PS2 female/USB mail adaptor and into the USB port. Is there a driver that would make this work?

It should have an entry in BIOS to enable USB keyboard support!
