I cannot gain access to the full capacity of my 160GB Maxtor Drive (Drive 3). I had access to full capacity until I chose to reinstall the OS from the Windows 2000 Pro CD. The install was assisted by the MaxBLAST3 installation software received with the purchase of the drive (Nov 2004).

I selected the drive, MaxBLAST3 automatically created a partition of 32GB, installed the OS. I proceeded to install the drivers, SP4 (downloaded on a HP Win 98 and transferred to the Soyo computer via CD, Internet Explorer 6, Norton SystemWorks 2003 (to be able to use Password Manager), Norton Ghost 10.0, and a myriad of software appplications.

Next purchased and installed the Seagate 250GB drive, partitioned into 66GB and 166GB partitions.

Backed up everything with Ghost. Used Ghost to load the image onto the Seagate 66GB partition.

Using the Win2000 Disk Management program, I proceeded to disable, uninstall, reinstall, partition and format the Maxtor 32GB drive in an effort to regain access to the full 160GB, to no avail.

Using various Master Boot Record utilities, I proceeded to Zero out the MBR for this disk, go thru the same process with the Disk Management program, still no luck.

The two Maxtor drives are on a RAID controller, set up as additional storage, not a RAID array.

I have removed all drives leaving the Seagate (System) and the Max 32GB as a slave (via Cable Select jumper settings), and ran thru the process again....still no luck.

Q: What else can I do to regain my missing 128Gigs?

MaxBlast 4 still will not recognize the full drive. Using MB4, I partitioned the 32GB into 3 partitions, no change in total capacity. Again, repartitioning into one partition still rendered the 32 GB total capacity.

download the drives utilities and wipe the drive(s). I suspect either you have set partitions with older software and answered yes to the question of use the whole drive [but since incorrectly sized due to age of software...] or you have a defective raid controller.

In the raid controller you should be able to initialize the drives. Do so and then partition and format in Disk Manager.

Is the LBA48 limitation due to your MB BIOS or Win2000? You need to have at least SP2 running BEFORE installing a drive larger than 137GB using 2000. If you are using Maxblast to overcome a BIOS limitation I don't think it will help with the Win2000SP1 limitations. If this is the case the solution is to slipstream at least SP2 into a Win2000 installation CD. As was stated by wanderer, the RAID setup shouldn't cause problems because you have SP4 installed prior to setting them up.

I thought I had solved the problem. I disconnected all RAID drives, connected Max160 as slave to Seagate250. Edited BIOS to show Slave as 'NONE', this removed all information on the Max160 from the BIOS. Booted with MaxBLAST4, selected Max160 as drive to be installed, selected Max160 as 'Additional Storage', selected WIN2000, selected 'ADVANCED' for partition setting, selected two NTFS partitions of 81.9GB each. Set the wheels in motion to partition and format the Max160 drive. I thought I was done with this problem.

However, upon system boot, Partition Magic recognized the full 160GB, but, the Windows Explorer and Win2000 Disk Management only displayed the 32GB.

Rebooted with MaxBLAST4, selected the Max160 and it still showed the two 81.9GB partitions.

Q: Where do I go from here?

The problem started when I allowed MaxBLAST3 to assist in reinstalling my computer. Prior to that I had two Maxtor160's installed with no problem, full capacity from the beginning. Now, a full reinstall of the Max160 showing 32GB with MaxBLAST4 renders the full capacity, 160GB as viewed by MB4, but when viewed by Windows Explorer or Win2000 Disk Manager, only 32GB shows up. Is there something on that disk that still wants to display only the 32GB? The MBR was Zero'ed out, the BIOS was edited to show 'NONE' for the subject drive, but still it shows 32GB. Do I need to totally obliterate all data from the drive from beginning to end, not just using a wipe feature that places a '0' on every byte on the disk?

Are you formatting FAT32 or NTFS? Win2000 will only allow NTFS formatting on partitions larger than 32GB. Not sure if this has anything to do with your problem. What service pack is on the installation CD of Win2000?

Win2000 SP5 (SP4 with Rollup 1), NTFS. Disconnected all drives, made Max160/32GB master. Ran MB4 with Max160/32GB, formatted disk as 1 partition, 163.9GB, completed as "DSK1 VOL1". Attempted to install Win2000 from CD on subject disk. During the process, Win2000 identified Max160/32GB as "32248MB Disk 0, with the statement "C:UNFORMATTED OR DAMAGED 156328MB". Win2000 Setup formatted partition, copied files, asked for reboot. Nothing..no startup no nothin..

Rebooted to check BIOS, listed disk as 33821MB.

Connected Seagate System Master, Max160 Slave, ran MB4. It listed Max160 as "Secondary Slave, Maxtor 6Y160P0, 163.9GB". The Detail Box listed the following: Part'n 1, Size=871.4GB, File Type=UNK. Part'n 2, Size=278.5GB, File Type=UNK. Part'n 3, Size=8MB, File Type= UNK.
The installation procedure was completed with "DSK2 VOL1, Size=163.9GB, File Type=NTFS".

Reboot, My Computer showed "Local Disk G:, left mouse click 'G not formatted, format now?' answer MO, right click/properties displayed "Explorer.exe Application Error, Instruction at "0x04d4423a" referes to memory at "0x00000000" could not be "read".

It appears that all the formatting and disk surface manipulation still leaves some information identifying this disk as "32248 MB Disk".

Maybe a call to Maxtor on Monday will return something constructive.

Stay Tuned....Dave

This is an excerpt from the 48 bit LBA site.
EnableBigLba registry value. To enable 48-bit LBA support with Windows 2000 you must add or change the EnableBigLba registry value to 1 in the Windows registry. Simply upgrading and installing Service Pack 3 does not enable this registry value by default. For instructions on how to add EnableBigLba to the Windows registry, click here.

Thanks for staying in tune.
Flash....Maxtor Tech Support to the rescue.

Talked with Max Tech Support. It was the most enlightening conversation I have ever had with ANY Tech Support. I could hear him clearly. He spoke perfect English. He knew what I was dealing with. And, he knew EXACTLY what to do.

Following was the procedure described by Les, Max Tech Support in Colorado.

Boot computer with MaxBLAST4 floppy.
Click Next, Done.
Open the 'Utilities' feature.
Click Next, Done.
Select 'Set HD Size'.
Click Next, Done.
Displayed 163.9GB.
Click Next, Done.
Accept all displayed information.
Click Next (about 3 times), Done.
Being a DOS program, just hit the power switch to POWER DOWN (this is very important, DO NOT JUST REBOOT, POWER DOWN.)
Click, Done.

All rotating machinery stopped, eject floppy, boot to system. Done.

The Max160/32, is no longer a 32GB Drive. It is a 152.2GB Drive with a 32GB Partition.

Les confided in me that Maxtor had replaced a number of drives as 'Defective' before the above procedure was brought to their attention.

Now, I have made this information available to all who chose to read Computing.Net.

Good Luck to all, Dave
