Freezing Hardware Manager

Ok, I am trying to install my plug and play type RCA (model H100) mp3 player and when it gets to the Hardware Update box that pops up in the middle of the screen it just freezes and the program stops responding and remains indefinately at 0% and I have to end up ALT-CTRL-DELETING it to end the non responsive program. It not only does this with my mp3 player but also when I try to update any driver or device on my computer via the internet. How can I fix this?
