I am looking for a free or very low cost way to block sites on my network. I am running a Win2k machine with Internet connection sharing. I want to just install the software on the server and allow it to block sites for all the computers on that network.
I also have a server running Active Directory that the machines connect to. This is not the same machine that is running ICS. Is there a way to do it through AD and Group Policies?

If you want to block individual sites you can do it in the HOSTS file (in C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC folder). You must insert entries like
127.0.0.1 ads96.bannermall.com ##
which direct access to localhost (i.e. back to the same PC). Have a look in sample file HOSTS.SAM for more info, but the "live" file must be called just HOSTS

Ahh why didn't I think of that. That would also be easy to set up on the network. Just copy it to all the machines. Wow, thanks a bunch Rambler!
