Comment: How do I format my hard drive? My system has W2k Pro as the OS. It is in NTFS format and has been right from day one. All I have is the CD that came with my machine. Is there a boot disk required as when formating with W95 & W98 and if so how do I make one. Any cautions I should know about? Any assistance would be appreciated. Thanks

Reply: (edit)You need to create bootup disks. Grab some floppies and put win 2k cd in your PC. (You'll need 4) On CD go run the MAKEBT32 file from the BOOTDISK folder. Label each disk. Put boot floppy 1 in PC and reboot. You will now receive the normal Winnt (2K) boot up screens. follow the instructions. When prompted to load to specific location, remove partitions, then create a new one and then you'll be asked to format. N.B. Formatting will remove all data (it will be lost). Also the loading of Win2k is totally different then Windows 9*. If your not familiar with it, look it up on the net, or buy a book. Good luck

Reply: (edit)hi loyde do you mean you want to do a fresh install or just format a partition. if doing a fresh install, boot from cd in bios if your system allow to save bother of making floppies. then follow on screen instruc's. ntfs in best formatt for w2k as recommended by microsoft. if just formatting a partition such as D:\ then admin tools - disk management - and format ( make sure you have admin privs so you can do this ). as Dafs points out formatting C:\ would wipe all data. sure you realise just pointing out. w2k is a doddle to load, remember to use service pack 1, SP2 is out but not too much in it. mick

Reply: (edit)No partitons and don't want any yet, just want to do a complete wipe out and start over. A little concerned when I read dafs response, "Also the loading of Win2k is totally different then Windows 9*. If your not familiar with it, look it up on the net, or buy a book." It sounds like there is quite a bit more to this than what is needed for W95/98. What are some of the tricky points?? Thanks

Reply: (edit)If computer supports cd-rom boot start the computer with the w2k cd in the drive pick clean install and when it starts setup it will ask where you want to install it.Pick the drive or partition you want and you will be offerred the choice of a fresh format. If the PC does not support the cd-rom boot that is when you need the four boot disks. These can be made from the cd. In w2k with the cd in the drive go to run and type in the cd-rom drive letter and type bootdisk /makeboot
