Comment:

I have a PIII Laptop with Win2000 on it, working OK. But I want to clean install Win2000 on it (XP not compatible with this configuration), as there is lot of stuff which I want to get rid of and also current installation some times gives problem. Now my problem is when I try to install Win2000 I get a msg as there is no sufficiant space on C drive and Windows folder is already present. So I tried formatting C drive, but I get a msg as the drive is in use and cannot be formatted. My drive is 12 GB NTFS drive, My Windows copy is good and working, no issues.

So how can I format my C drive and install clean copy of Win2K.

I believe that you need to download the 4 Windows 2000 boot floppies and boot to them. Follow the instructions and you should be able to install 2000 to your hard drive.

You boot from the W2K CD, during install one has the options of partioning/formatting. You can not run install from within windows!

bootdisk.com has the images for the 4 floppies; save each to a hard-drive, expand each to a floppy - use those floppies.

Usually one uses either the standard W2K install option to reformat the partition, or preformats (as fat32) via a '98 bootdisk (format util).

As already mooted you can run setup via a CD boot or the 4 floppies + CD...; but as you do not have floppy drive in this system - logically you use the CD boot approach.

W2K setup/installation how to...

Seems downloading floppy images is a bit pointless!!

In post-2 there is request for where to download the boot-floppies (images)...

"boss-ai"...

Have you gone thru' the links above re' installing W2K?

I have the feeling you're not approaching the whole sequence correctly - as per the numerous how to references...?

If everything is followed correctly you ought to be able to:

1. reformat c: and re-install etc.;

2. not reformat c: - but do a parallel installation;

3. repair current installation;

The assorted reference above in various posts cover all of the above...

Think!!!

You are bypassing a couple of steps in the "boot from CD" procedure.

You already have a 2kPro installation, you first have to get rid of it.

1. Delete Partition

2. Format Partition

Now it will install!

If this is your first time doing this, be certain you have all of your drivers downloaded to disk before starting.

OK. Thanks for the help.

BUT when the recovery console appears, it gives me option to install on C: drive which is already NTFS, so when I select the drive, the msg I get is there is no enough space on this drive and select another partition. But I want to install on the same partition (ie C drive), but it doesn't allow me, it is going in circles :(

Boss_ai,

I had a similar situation when I was trying to install W2k over an XP installtion already present on my laptop. I reach to the same point when i need to select the partition for installtion, and I choose to delete the exixting windows partition and the setup does not allow me to do that.

The thing I did and worked well for me is the following. I booted from w2k CD and I choose to start the computer wit CD support. After that, you go to your root drive (C:) and type "fdisk". I am sure you can find on the net how to use fdisk. You will need to delete the non-DOS (ie NTFS) partitions and create a new primary partition (or more) and make it active. Then you have to format the drive from DOS. After that is done, you have a clean FAT32 drive and you can start the setup of w2k smoothly.

OK Guys. Thank you for all the help. Initially I thought of taking out the HDD from laptop and putting it in USB enclosure to make it a USB drive and then format it. But that option is not useful as I think my CDROM drive being old, does not support bootable CD's. SO some how I managed parallel port floppy drive and formatted my hard disk. Then the windows2000 installation went smooth.

Thanks again, you people are very helpful.
