Comment:
Hi, I'm trying find a way to log off users after hours, say 4pm if they are still log on to their XP machine. I was able to set it to where they can't log on after hours.

These are my settings.
On their profiles, I've set logon times.
In group policy, computer configuration/windows settings/security settings/local policy/security options I enable these two:
auto logg off user when logon time expires
auto logg off user when logon time expires (local)

I refresh/rebooted the clients and also the server. All my other GPO works except for this one... Any ideas?

BTW, here is my setup.
Windows 2000 Server Domain Controller
XP Clients.

Did you search the MSKB?

Umm, yeah... your comments usually never help Jennifer... It's always the same, have you search this on MSKB or in google. Yes, I have.

She does that because we're not here to do research and/or thinking for other folks who are, or should be, quite capable of doing it themselves (we're also not here to help do homework either). You'll often see remarks like "google is your friend" in these forums. That's a polite way of saying "there's plenty of info available if you just look".

I looked at the link she posted (kind of her to point you in the right direction, wasn't it!), if that didn't work for you, then you must have done something wrong.

Regardless, being snotty isn't likely to get you much help.

OK People, We are all here to either get help or help someone so, let's stop the arguments and offer suggestions!
Thank You!

Hello Rocky007,
I work at a public library and we have a public computer lab where at closing time we had a hard time getting people off.
What I ended up doing was using a program called Poweroff. A free shutdown utility
Created by Jorgen Bosman
Made in Belgium.

Read here about the program:
http://users.pandora.be/jbosman/pow...

Also, read how to set it up so you can do it remotely here:
http://www.webjunction.org/do/Displ...

Once you have it set up you can create a batch file to log them off all at once, then create a Scheduled Task to run that batch file at whatever time you need it to be.

Hope this helps.
Frankie

LOL Jennifer....I wasn't arguing either. Perish the thought! I was possibly being a little sarcastic, but arguing.......never! ;)

It was nice of Frankie to 'straighten us out' though........oh darn, there goes that sarcasm again...........

Forgot to mention.....

Just for the record....a quick google search of:

logoff+utility+windows

Yielded the following:

http://www.google.ca/search?hl=en&q...

It's simply amazing what one can find if one only looks.

Darnit, there goes that sarcasm again! *sigh*

This is the old adage about teaching a man to fish. Problem is some folks aren't interested in fishing.

Okay, it appears my questions didn't come across correctly. I'm looking for a way to do this through Active Directory. Is that possible?

Sorry Jenn, I did not mean it in a rude way. It's likely that most people here will post comments to search google. Once that happens, it's like a chain, everyone else says the darn same thing. I've use up all the resource I could fine. Google, friends, and books.

I understand some people post comments without using other resources available to them. But you guys must also understand that people come here looking for answers and not to be routed to some foreign place.

To a non-tech person it's like calling your cable company and getting transfer back in forth, to and from, departments to departments, and still your question doesn't get answer. Those times that it does fix, maybe 4 hours - 8 hours, days on the phone, it's because the customer gives up and takes whatever is on the table.

Anyway, lucky for me I do know some computers. And have again search online, test all, to the best of my knowledge but can not get it working. Maybe there isn't a way to log of users at a set time through Active Diretory. Or maybe there is, but how.

If you access the Active Directory and select a user, and under 'Account' after setting Permitted Logon hours, it still doesn't work, then try phoning/mailing microsoft.

The attitude on this place sucks. Some of us are only here because we are doing research. A google of "idle user" "windows xp" and "force logout" brought me here. So when I see a reply "did you search xxx.com" I have to agree with the OP.

Maybe a reply like "there is nothing built in, you should search for a utility" would be helpful and still allow you to feel superior about your researching abilities.
